The established providers of light at the time were gas companies and it was debatable at the time if electricity could be made cheaper than gas energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Primitive Methods:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thomas Edison was one of the first to have the urgent need to solve the problem of charging customers as he developed the <a href=\"http:\/\/edisontechcenter.org\/NYC.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pearl Street station<\/a> in Manhattan. Unlike previous electrical installations which were just one factory or one wealthy mansion with its own power station, Edison had many customers on one circuit. So how could he tell who was using more power?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Measuring Watts (without the time):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-571 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/JouleHeatingBulb400.jpg\" alt=\"JouleHeatingBulb400\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/JouleHeatingBulb400.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/JouleHeatingBulb400-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/JouleHeatingBulb400-24x14.jpg 24w, http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/JouleHeatingBulb400-36x20.jpg 36w, http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/JouleHeatingBulb400-48x27.jpg 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joule_heating\" target=\"_blank\">Joule Heating<\/a> was one way to figure out how much power was being generated. A certain amount of power would light a certain number of bulbs at a given brightness. William Stanley used this method to prove to George Westinghouse that his transformers worked in the <a href=\"http:\/\/edisontechcenter.org\/GreatBarrington.html\" target=\"_blank\">Great Barrington AC power experiment<\/a> in 1886. In that case he proved the change in voltage by using an array of lightbulbs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Measuring Watts and Time:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile in New York Thomas Edison used two systems before the watt-hour meter. First he charged customers by the number of light sockets they had in their house or business. By observing how much material migrated from one electrode to another in an electrolytic cell he could calculate the amount of electricity used.
