By using &#8220;valves&#8221; and thermionic emission you can have low and high voltages control\/read each other. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edisontechcenter.org\/VacuumTubes.html\">More on vacuum tubes &gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The operation of the Crest Voltmeter is described as: &#8220;The condenser terminal or other condenser connected to the high-tension lead takes a charging current at all times proportional to the differential or rate of change of voltage across its terminals. At both the positive and negative maxima of the voltage waves this current is zero and the time integral or area of the current wave between these zero values is a direct measure of the difference between the maximum and minimum voltages.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=0Fk2AQAAMAAJ&amp;lpg=PR2&amp;ots=CwAQ8m4dRz&amp;dq=E.%20Doyle%20and%20L.%20Chubb%20voltage%20meter&amp;pg=PA112#v=onepage&amp;q=E.%20Doyle%20and%20L.%20Chubb%20voltage%20meter&amp;f=false\">More &gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>E.B. Moullin developed the first real vacuum tube voltmeter (1922) thanks to Irving Langmuir&#8217;s improvement of the triode vacuum tube.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-360 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/BigVacuumTubeMeter900-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"BigVacuumTubeMeter900\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/BigVacuumTubeMeter900-227x300.jpg 227w, http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/BigVacuumTubeMeter900.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>How vacuum tube voltmeters work:<\/b><br \/>\nVoltmeters in the 1920s and beyond put AC current from the grid in the triode vacuum tube. DC current applied to an electrode (hot cathode) would pass through the metal grid and was received on the other side. The amount of electrons passing through the grid would change as the AC current changed the charge values in the metal grid. The max and minimum voltages could be determined by the DC current signal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-361 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/earlyVacTubMeterFront900-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"earlyVacTubMeterFront900\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/earlyVacTubMeterFront900-211x300.jpg 211w, http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/earlyVacTubMeterFront900.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/>An amplifier stage is usually added to the circuit which can increase the sensitivity of the meter and increases the input impedance. This allows the amount of power drawn by the triode on the main circuit to be reduced to nothing, and therefore the instrument can be highly accurate. Note that vacuum tube voltmeters need time for the cathode to warm up before they can work.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Vacuum Tube Voltmeter<\/b><br \/>\n<b>Advantages:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can measure very high and low voltages (with more dynamic range than before)<\/li>\n<li>Can measure high frequencies as well as utility line frequencies<\/li>\n<li>Does not disturb the circuit being measured.<\/li>\n<li>Not subject to magnetic field disturbances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Disadvantages:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Large and heavy compared to semiconductor devices<\/li>\n<li>Vacuum tubes burn out and have to be replaced<\/li>\n<li>Requires a lot of power to warm up vacuum tubes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-362 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/VacuumTubeVoltmeterInsides900-1.jpg\" alt=\"VacuumTubeVoltmeterInsides900\" width=\"900\" height=\"681\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/VacuumTubeVoltmeterInsides900-1.jpg 900w, http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/VacuumTubeVoltmeterInsides900-1-300x227.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.edisontc.org\/ui\/files\/2016\/02\/VacuumTubeVoltmeterInsides900-1-768x581.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The quest to measure high voltages using vacuum tubes was something radio pioneers shared in common with the utility industry.
